Curiosities

1834

Duke Miloš Obrenović ordered the first general census in Belgrade. The census included not only men, like it used to be before, but also women. Gipsy women were the only exception and they were not listed in the census. Back then, 7033 inhabitants were listed in Belgrade (4199 male and 2834 female). The census included Serbs and Jews, and there were 769 houses at that time.

1839

The Law on the Organization of the Municipalities established the Administration of Provincial Towns (municipal authority). Belgrade was divided in districts and it was declared to be a municipality. In 1870, the ancient name Administration of Provincial Towns was replaced by the name of Management of Provincial Towns and twenty years later, it became the City Authority. The Administration of Provincial Towns stayed for the longest period of time in the building of former Serbian Police (Glavnjača), in today’s Student Park. The building was demolished during the bombing, in 1941.

1841

Belgrade was officially declared to be Serbian capital city. Duke Miloš Obrenović leaves Kragujevac and permanently settles down in his lodging in Topčider.

1866

The first regulatory map of Belgrade was made, including thorough sketches of all the streets in provincial town in Šanac. The map also included squares and places for markets and parks. Emilijan Joksimović made the map, by command of duke Mihailo Obrenović. Knez Mihailova Street was among the first new streets.

1891

The first water system was opened. The water first came from the well of Terazije, in presence of many guests and citizens.

1922

The first general map of Belgrade was brought, based on the international tender advertised in 1921 by the Board of the Municipality of the City, on initiative of the Association of Serbian engineers and architects.
